Its population has touched the 5 lakh mark in the year 2001 and is likely to undergo higher growth rates. Like any other urban town, Ajmer too has its needs of development. The undulating topography, increasing population and living standard, socio-economic pressures etc makes it essential to take up activities related to the infrastructural development.
RUIDP, with financial support from the ADB, has done the following works in order to improve the general living conditions in this historical town-
Water Supply Rehabilitation and Expansion
In order to further improve the distribution of Bisalpur Dam water, the work of construction of a number of storage/service reservoirs and distribution pipe networks is underway. These works are being done under 4 packages amounting to Rs. 22.84 crores. It is hoped that about 75,000 people will be immediately benefited with improved water supplies . Shakti Nagar, Saraswati Nagar, Ratidang reservior are handed over to PHED for benefited citizen of Ajmer.
Sewer line and Sewerage Treatment Plant
![]() Hurdles under the Ground |
The narrow streets, dense areas and hilly topography
can be a nightmare for the city authorities, when it comes to handling
the waste waters. Ajmer has suffered from it for decades now where the
streets stink of sewage, scavengers loiter around and ground water/surface
water bodies have been getting contaminated unabatedly.
Before the RUIDP endeavors, there was no sewer line except for the Dargah
area in Ajmer. RUIDP sewerage works (total cost likely to be Rs 53.57
crores) are under way through five sewer line packages and tender of
one STP at Khanpur is under process. . The sewer line works are too
difficult due to the rocky strata, dense and busy city areas, sub soil
water, public inconvenience and hindrance, under ground utilities etc.
Besides, the city which is experiencing such a mammoth work for the
first time, is worried more about the trenches on the roads rather than
the future fruits of benefits. But RUIDP is going on with the work steadily
surpassing all such hindrances and making people aware about the future
benefits through CAPP activities. 189.991 KM sewer line already laid.
Railway Over Bridges
Ajmer, a historical headquarters of Indian Railways has a number of railway tracks which cut the city traffic in parts and life almost stops when trains pass. As a result, the only unobstructed road, the Station Road is swarmed with traffic. In order to combat this bottleneck and provide relief to the ever increasing city's traffic, two bridge works namely an ROB at CRPF Railway crossing and extension of the age old Martindale Bridge toward Beawar road are underway under RUIDP. The works of Martindale Bridge toward Beawar road is completed. These works costing about 12 crores will be completed by the end of February 2007 and will help in the development of the city.
Widening and Strengthening of Roads
In order to improve the traffic management of the city and to improve the quality of roads to reduce congestion, pollution and vehicle operating costs, two major incoming roads, namely Jaipur Road and Beawar Road have been widened and put to use. These roads costing 16.55 crores have given a new look to the entrance to the city and are already contributing to safe and smooth traffic conditions.
Fire Fighting Services
In order to increase the coverage of the existing fire fighting services, reduce the response time and achieve greater mobility of fire fighting services, two new fire stations namely at Sedaria and Longia Mohalla (costing Rs 54.98 lacs) have been completed and handed over to the Municipal Council. Besides a number of fire fighting vehicles/equipments have also been provided to the concerned department. The fire stations constructed by RUIDP are of modern nature and high quality and with their use the Municipal Council shall be able to provide relief to both the interior areas as well as far flung out skirt areas.
Drainage

These drains are benefiting almost the whole city by way of managing the rain water easily. Total cost of the drainage works is about Rs.7.15 crores.
Solid Waste Management
Like all other Indian urban town, the menace of solid waste is creating havoc in Ajmer too. It produces more than 100 MT of solid waste everyday which needs to be scientifically managed and disposed off. The present solid waste management system in Ajmer is inadequate and improper. A modern landfill site has been developed at Sedariya (costing about Rs. 50 lakhs) and is ready for use. Besides, machinery and equipment for managing the solid waste is also being provided to the MCA. In order to address to the needs of the city up to the year 2032, an elaborate Solid Waste Master Plan has also been prepared for the reference and use of the city authorities. RUIDP feels that the menace of solid waste is mainly due to lack of public awareness and participation, hence an extensive awareness programme has also been taken up under CAPP activities.
Health & Medical Services
In order to reduce the patient load of the main city hospitals and provide quicker and easily accessible medical facilities to the outskirt and nearby areas, a prestigious 50 bedded modern Satellite hospital is completed and start providing relief to the people.
. This cost is Rs. 2.42 crores.
Slum Improvement
Various slums have developed on the hill slopes and near the drains in Ajmer city. Out of the many such slum areas, 23 slums were identified by the RUIDP after detailed studies and surveys and were approved by the city authorities. The chosen slum areas are Chaurasiyavas, Nosar, Kotra, Chamarghati, Paharganj, Jadughar, Kumhar Ka Beda / Shankar Nagar, Khanpura-Chisti Nagar, Parbatpura, Makhupura, Jhalkari Nagar, Ghooghra Ghati, Lohakhan, Jatiya Hill, Boraj Basti, Kanjar Basti, Nagfani-Boraj Road, Sanjay Nagar, Trambey Basti, Longiya Mohalla, Gujar Dharti, Rabadiya Mohalla, Nagbai & Udayganj. The work of concrete roads, water pipe lines, drains and community toilets are underway. Works in all identified slums have been completed and slum dwellers have expressed their happiness and satisfaction about these works. Concrete roads and drains have really changed the benefited slums and provided clean and livable conditions.
